How to Turn iPhone Voice Memos into Text (Fast)

The Missing Feature

The Voice Memos app on iPhone is iconic. It's simple, reliable, and installed on every device. But for years, it has lacked one crucial feature: Transcription.

(Note: iOS 18 is rumored to bring some features, but for now, users are stuck).

If you record a 1-hour meeting in Voice Memos, you have a 1-hour blob of audio. No text. No search.

The Workflow Fix

You don't need a new app. You just need TalkFlow to act as the "Export to Text" button for Voice Memos.

2-Tap Transcription

  1. Record as usual in Voice Memos.
  2. Tap the ... (three dots) next to your recording.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Tap TalkFlow.

Why it's better than a dedicated recorder app

  • Native Quality: Voice Memos uses advanced audio processing for clear sound.
  • iCloud Sync: Your recordings sync to your Mac and iPad automatically.
  • No Lock-in: You aren't trapping your audio in a paid subscription app like Otter. You own the file.

Perfect for:

  • Songwriters (lyrics + melody)
  • Journalists
  • Therapists
  • Students

Why transcribe Voice Memos?

Interviews, lectures, doctor's notes, ideas recorded while driving — Voice Memos pile up and become unsearchable. A transcript turns a 20-minute memo into skimmable text you can search, summarize and file.

Step-by-step: Voice Memos → TalkFlow

  1. Install TalkFlow from our homepage.
  2. Open Voice Memos, tap the recording → Share (box-with-arrow icon).
  3. Choose TalkFlow Transcriber and read the transcript seconds later.
  4. Copy to Notes, or push to Notion with our Notion export guide.

Tips for long recordings

  • Record close to the source with Lossless quality off (compressed is fine and faster to process).
  • For 30+ minute lectures, see our student workflow in lecture-to-notes workflow.
  • Noisy rooms: enable Enhance Recording in Voice Memos (magic-wand icon) before sharing.

FAQ

How long a memo can TalkFlow handle? Everyday memos (minutes to ~1 hour) work. Multi-hour recordings are better split first.

Can it identify speakers? TalkFlow produces a clean transcript; for diarized meeting output pair it with the Notion export guide workflow.
