How to Transcribe WhatsApp Voice Notes on iOS
WhatsApp voice notes are convenient for the sender but often inconvenient for the receiver. Whether you're in a meeting, a noisy environment, or simply prefer reading, having a quick way to transcribe these notes is a game-changer.
Setting Up the Shortcut
- Install the Shortcut: Tap the "Get Shortcut" button on our homepage.
- Add to Library: Confirm the installation in your Shortcuts app.
- Permissions: Allow the shortcut to access Speech Recognition when prompted.
How to Use It
Using the transcriber is incredibly simple and integrates directly with WhatsApp:
- Open a WhatsApp chat with a voice note.
- Long press the voice note you want to transcribe.
- Select Forward or Share from the menu.
- Tap the Share icon (square with arrow) in the bottom right corner.
- Select "Transcribe Voice Note" from the share sheet.
Within seconds, you'll see a pop-up with the transcribed text!
Tips for Best Results
- Clear Audio: The clearer the audio, the better the transcription.
- Language Support: The shortcut automatically detects the language, but works best with major languages like English, Spanish, French, etc.
- Length: Very long voice notes (over 5 minutes) might take a bit longer to process.

Why WhatsApp voice notes need transcription
WhatsApp sends voice notes as compressed OPUS audio. In a meeting, on a train, or with 10+ unread voice notes in a group chat, listening through all of them is slow. A transcript lets you skim in seconds, search later, and keep records.
TalkFlow works directly from the iOS share sheet — no chatbot to add to groups, no audio forwarded to third-party servers you don't control.
Detailed setup (first time, ~2 minutes)
- Install TalkFlow Transcriber from our homepage.
- Open Shortcuts → Library and confirm TalkFlow appears.
- When prompted, allow Speech Recognition and Notifications (for the transcript popup).
- Optional: add TalkFlow to the share sheet favorites so it's one tap away.
Transcribing a WhatsApp voice note (every time, ~10 seconds)
- Open the WhatsApp chat and long-press the voice note → Forward (or tap Share on iOS).
- Choose TalkFlow Transcriber from the share sheet.
- Read the transcript. If the note isn't in English, TalkFlow translates it to English automatically.
- Tap the transcript to copy it, or save it to Notes/Notion with our Notion export guide.
Troubleshooting
- Share sheet doesn't show TalkFlow? Scroll to the end of the share row → More → enable Shortcuts, or open the note via Files.
- Wrong language detected? Speak-close, low-noise audio transcribes best. Very short (<3s) notes in mixed Hindi-English ("Hinglish") may need a second listen.
- Long voice notes (5+ min)? TalkFlow handles them, but for lectures or interviews see our Voice Memos guide workflow.
FAQ
Is transcribing WhatsApp voice notes private? TalkFlow processes audio securely without retaining it — unlike Telegram transcription bots that keep your audio on their servers.
Does it work for WhatsApp calls or statuses? Voice notes, forwarded audio and saved OPUS/OGG files work. Live calls can't be transcribed by any shortcut.
Can I translate Hindi/Spanish/Arabic voice notes? Yes — 60+ languages translate to English automatically. See the language-barrier guide.
